Jonathan P. Grindal, 65, of Harrisville, Penn., died July 28, surrounded by his loving family, at SUNY Upstate NY Medical Center in Syracuse, N.Y., where he had been a patient since July 18.
Born May 23, 1947, in Cambridge, Mass., a son of Clifford S. and Elizabeth Casey Grindal, he graduated high school from Lincoln Academy in Newcastle and later attended Wentworth Institute in Boston, Mass.
He married Brenda J. Jones on Oct. 11, 1975, at St. Francis Solanus Church in Harrisville, N.Y.
A Vietnam era veteran, he entered the U.S. Army on Oct. 3, 1968, and served mostly in Germany, Italy and the Alps. He was honorably discharged as a SP4 on Oct. 20, 1971, from Fort Dix, N.J.
Following his military service, he worked for Measurex out of Cupertino, Cal., as a computer control systems technician at the Newton Falls Paper Company in Newton Falls. He later went to work for Superior Computers in Carthage, and as a bus driver for five years for Harrisville Central School, retiring in 2010.
Jon was a member of the National American Legion and Lake Bonaparte Conservation Club.
Throughout his life, some of his favorite pastimes included boating, cutting wood, working on handyman projects, and he particularly enjoyed doing anything that he could for family, friends and neighbors. He will be especially remembered for his great sense of humor and his devotion to his family.
Surviving besides his wife of 36 years, are daughters and a son-in-law, Angela L. and William Evans of Portland, and Amanda L. Grindal of Syracuse, N.Y.; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Rita Grindal of Nobleboro; sister, Betsy Cole of Belleville, Ontario, Canada; mother-in-law, Evelyn Jones of Harrisville, N.Y.; brothers-in-law, Randy and Ronnie Jones, both of Glenfield, N.Y.; and beloved nephew, Daniel Mahoney of Syracuse, N.Y.
Jon’s funeral took place at Scanlon Funeral Home, 14187 State St., Harrisville, followed by a funeral mass from St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church, Harrisville, N.Y. with the Rev. Robert L. Decker, Pastor, officiating. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery, Harrisville, N.Y.
