Joseph William Mariani, of York, passed away Aug. 8.
The son of Joseph T. and Eugenia Mariani, Joe was born Oct. 28, 1918 and raised in Paterson, N.J.
A graduate from Paterson public schools in 1938, he started working at Wright Aeronautical Corp., a manufacturer of aircraft engines. In 1942 Joe married Elizabeth Hanson of Hawthorne, N.J.
Shortly after, Joe entered the Army and was assigned to the 1022 Combat Engineer Co. Joe was sent overseas during WWII and served in France, Belgium, Holland, Luxemburg and Germany. As a soldier in the engineering corps, Joe was involved in bridge construction over the Rhine River.
Discharged in April 1946, he was then appointed to the New Jersey State Dept. of Law and Public Safety, Div. of Motor Vehicles where he remained for over 30 years, retiring as supervisor of the North Jersey area.
Betty and Joe moved from New Jersey to York and eventually purchased a summer home on Webber Pond in Bremen where the family had vacationed since the early 1950s.
Elizabeth passed away in March 2003.
Joe is survived by sons and their wives, Robert and Barbara Mariani of North Hampton, N.H., and Glenn and Esther Mariani of Bremen; brother, Eugene; niece, Nancy of Vermont; grandchildren, Kris Mariani of Bridgton, and Kimberly and husband Greg Orso of York; and great-grandchildren, Antonia and Maeve Mariani, Abby, Will, Ben and Sarah Orso.
Funeral services will be private.
