Joy Sturgis Foster, 82, of Bath, died Oct. 29 at HillHouse Assisted Living in Bath.
She was born in Boston, Mass. on July 28, 1933, a daughter of William A. and Margaret (Hall) Sturgis.
She graduated from Abbott Academy in Andover, Mass. and in 1951 she married Richard C. Foster. She graduated from Keene State College in Keene, N.H. and was a teacher in the Con-Val School District in southern New Hampshire for many years, retiring in 1991. Joy also volunteered for the adult education program in the years after her retirement.
She was a member of the Nature Conservancy, New Hampshire Retired Teachers Association, Eastern Star, and Smith Memorial Congregational Church in Hillsborough, N.H.
She enjoyed traveling and collecting sand from each place she visited around the world. Her greatest pleasure was surrounding herself with family and friends at Pierce Lake in Hillsborough and at the Isle of Springs near Boothbay Harbor.
She was predeceased by her husband, Richard C. Foster in 1970; daughter, Joy Foster in 2000; and sister, Alice Carter Sturgis Grady in 2013.
She is survived by daughters, Susan Bean and husband Scott of Boothbay and Deborah Foster of Wiscasset; grandchildren, Amanda Widbiller and Max Widbiller; great-granddaughter, Micaela Widbiller; sister, Margaret Sturgis Ayer of Franklin, Conn.; and many nieces and nephews.
There will be no services but celebrations of her life with take place next summer.
