Joyce S. Carey, 82, of Schooner Cove, died June 18 after a courageous struggle with cancer.
Born in Meriden, Conn., she moved to Maine in 1990. While living in Connecticut she and her husband, Parker, owned a retail shoe store for many years. In Meriden, Conn. she was active in St. Andrews Episcopal Church serving on the vestry for two terms, and as its first woman Senior Warden for three terms. She was also a licensed lay reader and a lay eucharistic minister. In the community she worked with the Girl Scouts, the Meriden Visiting Nurse Assoc., and as a Hospice volunteer.
Since coming to Maine she had volunteered at Skidompha Public Library, Great Salt Bay School, and in the Pastoral Visitors program at Miles Memorial Hospital. At St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Newcastle she served on the vestry, in the choir, and as lay reading/chalice bearer. She also served on the Search Committee that brought the Rev. Stephen White to the church.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, and several nieces and nephews.
Celebration of her life 10 a.m., Fri., June 27 at St. Andrews Church, Newcastle.
