Joyce Ann Pfizenmayer (née Crosbie), of Damariscotta, formerly of Freeport, N.Y., passed away Jan. 15.
Born May 1, 1924 in Smith Center, Kan. she grew up in Lincoln, Neb. Joyce graduated from the University of Nebraska where she was a member of the Student Council, Secretary of the Mortar Board, editor of the Cornhusker and listed in “Who’s Who of American College Women”. In 1994 Joyce celebrated her Golden Anniversary as a Delta Gamma. She received her Masters degree in Education from Hofstra University and worked as a reading specialist within Island Trees Public Schools for nearly 30 years.
Joyce met her husband Walter (deceased May 2007) when he was stationed in Lincoln during WWII. Married in Lincoln, Neb. they moved to Long Island, N.Y. where they raised their three children and actively volunteered in many community organizations.
Upon retirement Joyce and Walter moved to Damariscotta where they lived for 21 years. An active member of St. Andrews parish, Joyce continued her volunteerism in many organizations including but not limited to The Twin Village Woman’s Club, Miles Memorial Hospital League, Lifeline, garden clubs and the American Cancer Society’s “Daffodil Days” fundraising endeavor – an organization Joyce was particularly proud to be a part of in honoring the memory of her mother (Mae Crosbie). Joyce also served as President of the Board of Directors of the Lincoln Home for Assisted Living.
Joyce is survived by three children, five of six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A scholarship fund has been established to be given to a high school senior with plans to major in education.
