Julian F. Howell, of Whitefield, passed away on April 17.
He was born Dec. 11, 1923 in Watertown, Mass. He graduated from Mount Hermon School and Trinity College.
He was a WWII veteran and proudly served his country as a twin and four-engine pilot.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Beatrice and Constance Howell.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dot; daughters Wendy Stanley of Portland, Heidi Gotlib and husband David of South Dartmouth, Mass., and Dolly Burns and husband Dan of Whitefield; sons, Jef and wife Cathi of Livermore, and Dick and wife Shari of Whitefield; brother, Leonard of Ft. Meyers, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Jonny and Jesse Gotlib, Caryn and Laura Howell, Josh and Ashley Howell, and Nathan and Hannah Burns; sister-in-law, Lee and husband Les Smith of Edgecomb; and brother-in-law, Art and wife Kay of Naples, Fla. His good friends also include Austin Moore and the men of the Whitefield Senior Men’s Group.
He was a resident of Whitefield for 54 years where he farmed for 30 years and was later employed at BIW. His life revolved around his farm, gardening, classical music, his town, the cottage at Sheepscot Lake, and his beloved country.
He was a member of the North Whitefield Fire Department for 30 years and held most offices, including finance chairman. He secured surplus government equipment for the fire departments and the school. He was chairman of the Whitefield Fish and Game for five years, chairman of the Whitefield Conservation Commission, responsible for the writing of the Whitefield Shoreland Ordinance, chairman of the planning board, a member of the town budget commission, a member of both the town and county Republican committees, and developed the Whitefield Veteran Memorial in which 70 people contributed labor, material and money. He was a member of several choruses. He also organized the Whitefield Senior Men’s Group.
He wished to extend his appreciation of the love, kindness, thoughtfulness, and understanding from his family, his friends and townspeople.

Visiting hours 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Sat., April 21 at Staples Funeral Home, Gardiner.
A spring burial in Whitefield is planned.
