Katharine “Kitty” H. Brown, 83, of Nobleboro, died in a car accident on July 12. She was born on Feb. 10, 1930 in Jamaica Plain, Mass. to Katharine Williams and Waldo C. Hodgdon.
Kitty was a kind and gracious woman who led a full and active life. After graduating from Wheelock College, she went on to raise a family of four devoted sons. She was passionate about her family, politics, and life-long learning. She loved the sea and the mountains, and was an avid hiker.
An accomplished poet, Kitty had a special connection with art and intuitive sense of esthetics. She was generous with her time, most recently volunteering with the Nobleboro Democratic Committee. She took classes at the University of Maine Senior College and was especially curious about local history. While living in Wiscasset, her residence prior to Nobleboro, she ran a popular bed and breakfast in what was once a colonial-era candle shop.
A native New Englander, her independent spirit attracted devoted friends from wherever she lived including Minneapolis and Colorado. Kitty did not shy from challenge and faced adversity with grace. She was an inspiration to her family, living out her values in a changing world.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Joan Munson.
She is survived by her loving sons, Dan (Marilyn), Frank, Peter (Elizabeth Derecktor), and Matt (Lia Rivamonte); grandchildren, Luke, Ramsey, Tom, Natalie, and Henry; step-grandchildren, Sophie and Andrei; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
