Katherine G. Schmidt, 99, of Damariscotta, died at the South Portland Nursing Home on Aug. 19, after a brief stay.
Mrs. Schmidt was born March 6, 1907, in Altadena, Cal., a daughter of Frank and Lillian Jonas Griffin. Shortly thereafter, her family moved back to Brooklyn, N.Y. She lived in Chatham, N.J. for 24 years before moving to Maine in 1975.
Mrs. Schmidt graduated from Maxwell Training School for Teachers, had her own kindergarten, and later taught public elementary school for about 10 years in Malverne, N.Y., before raising her own children.
Her husband of 52 years, Robert A. Schmidt, died in 1992. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law, Wolfgang P. Heide in 2004.
Mrs. Schmidt and her husband were charter members of two Lutheran Churches: Gloria Dei in Chatham, N.J. and Water of Life in Newcastle.
She was an avid reader and gardener, loved animals, and was known to her family and friends for her skills and expertise in all forms of needlework, including knitting, crocheting and embroidery.
The family wishes to thank “The Girls” for their compassion and loving care toward Mrs. Schmidt, enabling her to remain in her own home over the past seven years.
Survivors include a son, Robert A. Jr. and wife Sue; a daughter, Katherine Heide; and four grandchildren, Laura, Erik and Peter Schmidt, and Christian Heide.
Visiting hours 6-8 p.m., Mon., Aug. 21 at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland.
Funeral service 10 a.m., Tues., Aug. 22 at the South Portland Chapel with Rev. Hugh Pillsbury officiating. Burial will follow in the Old German Cemetery in Waldoboro.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital, Maine Medical Center, 22 Bramhall St., Portland, ME 04102-3175.
