Katheryn E. Lane, 85, of Damariscotta, passed away during the early morning hours of July 2 at Cove’s Edge Nursing Home with several family members at her bedside.
Katheryn was born on Dec. 14, 1926 in New Harbor to Bertrill and Hilda Butman Little. She attended the Walpole School, and as a young teen, she took care of many children in her closely-knit community. In later years, both her parents remarried; her mother to Vinal Kelsey, and her father to Eleanor Hemore.
On March 5, 1944 she married Guy E. Lane Sr. of New Harbor. The couple lived briefly in Bristol Mills, Edgecomb and Round Pond, before settling into their home in Damariscotta where they lived for 42 years and raised their six children.
Katheryn was a homemaker and took great pride in keeping her home at its best while caring for her family. She was well known for her wonderful biscuits. A very social person, two of her favorite pastimes were shopping and talking on the telephone. Throughout her life, she enjoyed babysitting and cared for many children in the Damariscotta area, often continuing to keep in touch with each and every one, even after they grew up and had families of their own.
Katheryn was an active member of the Damariscotta Baptist Church, serving several years as a Deaconess and always happy to assist in missionary aide projects.
Katheryn and Guy were married for 59 years before he passed away on April 12, 2003. At that time, Katheryn chose to move to Hodgdon Green. She truly loved living there. She enjoyed socializing with people of all ages, and especially loved having the presence of children in her life. She was among a group of her peers who performed in the annual Young At Heart concert, and enjoyed eating out at restaurants whenever possible. She especially enjoyed Moody’s Diner, Reunion Station and Round Top Ice Cream.
While living at Hodgdon Green, she discovered a hidden talent for art, particularly drawing and watercolors, often giving her creations as gifts.
Katheryn enjoyed many friendships. She could always be counted on to make someone smile or be by the side of those in need. She enjoyed meeting new people and made friends easily.
She was predeceased by her parents and stepparents as well as her brother, Manville “Brud” Little. Her father, Bertrill Little was lost at sea off Monhegan in 1954.
Katheryn is survived by her children, Theodore R. Lane of Damariscotta, Linda M. Krah and husband Kensell, Katheryn A. Castner and husband Eugene of Orlando, Fla., Guy E. Lane Jr. of Georgia, Gary E. Lane and wife Patricia of Damariscotta, and Tammy L. Richards Meserve and husband Joshua of Edgecomb; sister, Sara Oliver of Nobleboro; as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Katheryn’s memory may be sent to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, PO Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556. She often found joy and peace when in the company of animals, and had adopted a cat from the animal shelter several years ago.
