Keith W. Burns, 91, of Damariscotta, passed away on the afternoon of Feb. 28 at the Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta. Born in Nobleboro on July 4, 1918, he was the son of John and Goldie (Wellman) Burns.
Keith attended Nobleboro schools and graduated from Lincoln Academy in June of 1936. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from June of 1943 until his honorable discharge in December of 1945.
He was employed by the State Highway Department (D.O.T.) from 1936 to 1966, retiring after 30 years of dedicated work. He then went to work as a bus driver and custodian at the Nobleboro Central School for several years. He also worked for L.R. French, Inc. for about 10 years as well as working as a courier for The First National Bank.
He was a member of the American Legion and the Nobleboro Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Sage Swingers Square Dancers of Brunswick. Keith could always be seen working in his yard or mowing his lawn, in which he took great pride. He will always be remembered for his kind and simple ways and his great sense of humor.
He was predeceased by his parents; as well as a brother, Merton; and sister, Abby Burns Boynton.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Arlene Burns; children, Ellen Wheeler and husband Dick, Keith Burns Jr. and wife Darlene, and Pam Hardy and husband Ron; grandchildren, Mark Keast, Heather Keast, Richard Burns, Rodney Burns, Ryan Burns, Rachel Bailey, Jennifer Elwell and Chris Hardy; as well as 13 great-grandchildren.
Time of visitation 10-11 a.m., Fri., March 5 with a service to follow at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. He will be laid to rest in the Dunbar Cemetery in Nobleboro.
