Laura A. White, 91, formerly of Wayland, Mass., and longtime summer resident of Southport, passed away on the afternoon of Sept. 15 at the Gregory Wing of St. Andrews in Boothbay Harbor. Born in Boston, Mass. on Feb. 2, 1920, she was the daughter of Irving and Edna House.
Laura grew up in Auburndale, Mass. and attended local schools, graduating from Newton High School. After college, she worked for the John Hancock Company, and later went to work for Raytheon. Her most recent place of employment was for the League of Women Voters in Massachusetts.
Mrs. White was a very active part of the community in Wayland; she was on numerous boards and committees, and was instrumental in overseeing a new school built there. She was also a member of the Wayland Garden Club, the Wayland League of Women Voters, as well as the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts.
She always enjoyed politics, and tried to stay as active as possible in it. In her late 30s she got her private pilot’s license, and together with her husband, shared a love of flying. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, as well as at her summer home in Southport. Above all, she loved sitting on her front porch, basking in the warm summer sun, often times with a good book and cold drink.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Allan D. White, whom she married on May 31, 1946 at the Lincoln Park Baptist Church in West Newton, Mass.
She is survived by her son, Bruce White of Southport; grandchildren, Valerie L. Velho of Newcastle and Haley K. White of Southport; as well as their mother, Vicki White of Southport.
Friends and family will scatter the ashes of Laura and her husband off the coast of Southport in the spring of 2012.
