Leo W. Barter Sr., 88, of Boothbay, died Sept. 12 at his home. He was born June 9, 1927 in Boothbay Harbor. Leo grew up in Boothbay and graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School.
He began working in local shipyards. He ran his own septic business for a while. Leo worked for Bath Iron Works for over 30 years working as a sandblaster, pipe fitter and in the paint department until he retired.
Leo enjoyed camping, hunting, watching Western movies and loved to tell a good joke. He attended the Boothbay Baptist Church. He was a volunteer with the “Woodchucks,” a local group who help provide firewood to help the heating needs of the region. He had recently donated his chainsaw to the group.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Jessica Lynn Barter; and wife, Carolyn “Patsy” Barter.
He is survived by daughters, Linda Cusumano of Edgecomb, Beverly Elwell of Wiscasset, Susan Scott of Woodstock Valley, Conn., and Gail Alexander of Bath; son, Leo W. Barter Jr. of Boothbay; brother and writer, Roger “Bobby” Barter of Virginia; 17 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Friends are welcome to join the family for a time of visitation from 1-2 p.m. followed a service at 2 p.m. on Sat., Sept. 19 at the Boothbay Baptist Church. Rev. Dr. Steven Nash will officiate. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Boothbay.
