Leon Richard Shaw, Jr., 78, of Jefferson and Deltona, Fla., passed away on Aug. 22. He was born in Haverhill, Mass. on Sept. 28, 1930 to Leon Richard Shaw, Sr. and Esther Beatrice Dubuque. He graduated from Gardiner High School in 1947 at the age of 16 and joined the Army/Air Force October 1947. He trained at Webb AF Base, Big Springs, Tex. to fly F 80’s and F 86’s. In August 1954 he received his commission and wings as a distinguished graduate, one of the top five cadets. He completed his tour Aug. 1, 1956.
He graduated from University of Maine, Orono, June 1962, with a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry. He worked for Corning Glass Works for 10 years and moved to Naples in 1972 to work for GTE, Windham, then worked for the Maine State Highway Dept. in Bridgton until his retirement in 1992. For the past seven years he had resided in Deltona, Fla. and Jefferson.
He enjoyed collecting coins, his vegetable garden, discussing politics, playing cards and tracing his family tree, and his cat, Lucky.
He leaves behind his brother, John Ketchum Shaw of Old Orchard Beach; his wife of 52 years, Dorothy J. Ireland whom he married on Aug. 16, 1957; children, Richard Shaw and wife Angela Beaulieu Shaw, of East Pittston, Kelly Llewellyn and husband David of Deltona, Fla., Douglas Shaw of Hollywood, Cal., and David Shaw of Deltona, Fla.; grandchildren, Leigh and Lillian Shaw, David Llewellyn and wife Michele Hill Llewellyn, Orange City, Fla., Kristen Llewellyn Jackson and husband William of Geneva, Fla., and Jarod Llewellyn, Deltona, Fla.; and great-grandchildren, Alexandria and Elijah Llewellyn of Orange City, Fla.
There will be no funeral per his request. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
