Lillian Gowen, 86, of Arrowsic, passed away April 28 at a Brunswick Hospital.
She was born in Wiscasset on Feb. 23, 1921, a daughter of Archie L. and Alice (Colby) Rines.
She attended Wiscasset schools, graduated from Wiscasset High School in the class of 1938, and attended all of her Alumni Reunions over the past 69 years.
On May 16, 1942, she married Richard Gowen.
From 1974-1980 she was the Arrowsic tax collector.
Lillian was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Bath, and a very active member of the Bath Area Senior Citizens; she was a member of the Round Squares in Portland, the VFW Auxiliary, the Ladies Auxiliary Fire Department in Arrowsic, and the Coasters. She was on the Arrowsic School Board from 1952-1954.
She enjoyed boating, sewing for many people and was instrumental in sewing and putting together a quilt of the United States with the Ladies Auxiliary Fire Department in Arrowsic.
She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Gowen on May 17, 1986; son, Andrew Gowen on Dec. 11, 2005; brother, Benjamin Rines; and sisters, Eva Rankins and Gladys Kaler.
She is survived by her daughter, Gladys F. Coffin and husband Al of West Bath; sister, Marion Abbott and husband George of Wiscasset; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and 17 nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours 6-8 p.m., Mon., April 30 at Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High St., Bath.
Funeral Service 2 p.m., Tues., May 1 at Grace Episcopal Church in Bath, with Fr. John H. Smith officiating.
Gathering of family and friends will follow at Tubb’s Hall at the church.
Burial will be at Farmingdale cemetery in Farmingdale.
