Lloyd E. Williamson, 83, of Newcastle, passed away suddenly the evening of March 28 at a Brunswick hospital following a short period of failing health.
Lloyd was born on Oct. 27, 1926 in Brockton, Mass., the fourth and youngest child of Ralph Copeland Williamson and Mertie (Smith) Williamson. He graduated from Brockton High School in 1943, from Tufts University in 1947 and was a U.S. Navy veteran. While still in the Navy – and “on leave” from Tufts – he married his college sweetheart Jean Constance MacNeill on March 9, 1946 in Scituate, Mass.
Lloyd’s business career began in Boston at John Hancock Insurance. He went on to New England Life Insurance and then to Massachusetts Mutual Insurance in Springfield, Mass. In 1951 he joined Ernst & Ernst as a consultant and in 1954 became director of IT at Massachusetts Blue Cross/Blue Shield with responsibility for the installation and operation of that company’s first mainframe computer.
In 1964 the family moved from the Boston area to Old Greenwich, Conn. and Lloyd held positions in New York as IT director at Pfizer and W. R. Grace. In 1972 the family moved to Wilmington, Del. Where Lloyd served as a Vice President of Delaware Blue Cross/Blue Shield, a position he held for several years before becoming the business manager of medical groups, primarily Delaware Clinical & Laboratory Physicians, his last job before retiring in 1987.
In 1990, children grown and scattered by then, Lloyd and Jean moved to Newcastle where he began a new career as a very busy volunteer, the first at Round Top Center for the Arts as a worker, board member and Treasurer, then at Miles Memorial Hospital where he helped with, and taught, computer skills, and most recently at the Lincoln County Animal Shelter as a truly dedicated dog walker and socializer, a job he loved.
Lloyd was predeceased by his parents, two brothers and a sister.
He is survived by his wife Jean; sons, Steven T. Williamson and wife Patricia of Roxbury, Conn. and Jeffrey D. Williamson of Newark, Del.; daughters, Leslie J. W. Fairbanks and husband Richard G. of Vero Beach, Fla. and East Blue Hill and Dana W. Dimier and husband John R. of Vero Beach, Fla. and Camden; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
At Lloyd’s request there will be no services. The family will gather at a later time to celebrate his life as a true gentleman and a loving and beloved son, husband and father.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Lloyd’s memory be made to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, 27 Atlantic Highway, Edgecomb, ME 04556.
Arrangements are entrusted to the direction and care of the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta.
