Lloyd Paden Shepherd, 89, of Waldoboro, died Dec. 3 at Maine Veterans Home in Augusta. He was born Feb. 24, 1923 in a farmhouse near New Concord, Ohio to Will and Rhoda Paxton Shepherd, farmers.
He served in the Army-Air Force as a First Lieutenant Communications Officer on Okinawa during WWII and after the war in Korea. He graduated from Ohio State University with a Masters in Electrical Engineering. He worked at Mitre Corporation for much of his career as a project manager and department head for development of the AWACS radar system, still in use today.
He and his family lived in Westford, Mass., Senecaville, Ohio and recently in Waldoboro.
He enjoyed recreational activities, including bowling and basketball. He followed the Boston Celtics faithfully. He spent much of his retirement at the family cottage on Sunset Lake in Alton Bay, N.H., where he loved to swim, sail, fish with his friends and family and watch sunsets on the beach.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Hoon Shepherd; children, Joyce, Gary, Doug and Amy; grandchildren, Laura, Jeffrey, Megan, Ryan, Emily and Alex; and great-grandson, Brody.
