Lorraine P. Fossett, 81, of Bristol, passed away at her home with her family by her side, on the evening of Aug. 26. Born in Portland on April 10, 1931, she was the daughter of Huber and Inez (Towle) Tanner.
Lorraine grew up in Portland and South Portland, attending schools in both cities. She met Walter Fossett in Portland and on Aug. 28, 1948, they married. They lived in Portland, later moving to South Portland, where they would ultimately raise their family.
She sold Avon cosmetics for many years, made drapes for the area businesses, and also worked for Weight Watchers for several years.
She was an accomplished craftsperson, and often times showed her sewing and braided rugs in various craft fairs. She also upholstered small pieces of furniture, enjoyed gardening, and loved animals… taking in many stray dogs and cats.
She was a member of the Seaside Grange, as well as the Order of the Eastern Star. While in the Eastern Star, she was a Worthy Matron for both the Longfellow Chapter in South Portland, and the Evangeline Chapter in Windham. For over 10 years, she also wrote the Bristol column for The Lincoln County News.
She is survived by her husband, Walter Fossett of Bristol; children, Walter Fossett Jr. and wife Norma of South Portland, Nancy Fossett of Topsham, and Sandra Kierstead and husband David of Standish; sister-in-law, Elsie Herald; grandchildren, Aaron and Andrew Fossett, Gordon and Andrea Wiley, Nicholas Kierstead and Nicole Wickerman; as well as seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside service 1 p.m., Fri., Aug. 31 at the Crooked River Cemetery in Naples.
