Louis V. Zambello, Jr., 76, of Cumberland Foreside, died on Oct. 30. He was born on Oct. 6, 1933, in East Boston, to Antonetta Sarno and Luigi Zambello.
A graduate of Somerville High School, 1951, he was a member of their illustrious basketball state champion teams. He was offered a scholarship by Colby College to play basketball and captained the team his senior year, graduating in 1955. While there he met his wife of 53 years and made many life long friendships. After graduating he was active in fund raising, serving as president of his reunion classes, and mentoring student athletes. Recently he established a scholarship fund for Maine athletes. Colby honored him in October 2008 as their C Club Man of the Year.
Upon graduating from Colby he was commissioned a second LT in the U.S. Air Force. After his discharge from the Air Force he had a long career in sales and sales management, first with Kimberly Clark Corporation, then as VP of Sales/Golf for Spalding Sports Worldwide, Chicopee, Mass. He ended his career as a senior VP for the Reebok companies, Avia and Rockport Shoes.
Having spent summers at their cottage on Damariscotta Lake, where Mr. Zambello was active on the board of the Damariscotta Lake Watershed Association, Lou and Kathy decided to move permanently to Maine in 2004 from their longtime residence in Amherst, Mass.
He was an active supporter and fundraiser for the Casco Bay Y’s Adaptive Services. He was a member of the Falmouth Country Club and served on their House Committee. Lou was an avid golfer, skier, and huge Boston sports fan. He dabbled in musical theatre in his younger years and loved music of all kinds, especially Puccini opera. As often as he could he attended concerts at Berklee College of Music with his son conducting.
He was known for his overflowing love for his family, his keen sense of humor and his generous spirit.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Charles and Anthony Zambello.
He is survived by his sisters, Agnes Duffy and Marianna Sundin, both of California; wife, Kathleen (McConaughy) Zambello of Cumberland Foreside; son, Louis V Zambello III of Cumberland Center and wife Lindsey Rustad; and their children, Erika, Mary, and Louis Gwynn; son, Kenneth Zambello and wife Debra of North Reading, Mass., and daughter, Madelyn; and daughter, Gwenne Oberg of Cumberland Foreside and husband Kerry and their children, Matti and Nina.
Funeral mass 10 a.m., Sat., Nov. 14 at Holy Martyrs Church, 266 Foreside Rd., Falmouth, ME 04105.
