Louise E. Leach, 91, of Schooner Cove, died July 1 at Mercy Hospital.
She was born in Lamoine, a daughter of Hollis and Addie Ingalls Austin.
She graduated from Castine Normal School in Castine, and began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Penobscot.
She married Burleigh Leach on June 11, 1934. In the early 1940’s, they moved to Massachusetts, eventually living in Hamilton, where she taught third grade for 25 years before retiring.
She and her husband were avid golfers. After they retired, they wintered in Jekyll Island, Ga., where they golfed every day. During her time there, she learned how to make southern pine needle baskets. She also enjoyed knitting sweaters for her grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Burleigh H. Leach.
She is survived by a daughter, Diane L. Wilbur of Scarborough; two sons, Rodney A. Leach of South Paris, and Mark B. Leach of Simsbury, Conn.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Graveside service 10:30 a.m., Sat., July 8 at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St., Portland.
