Louise “Lou” M. Dean passed away peacefully Dec. 8 in Charlottesville, Va.
Lou was born April 19, 1928 in Perth Amboy, N.J., daughter of John W. Hendy and Grace D. Ritchie Hendy. She attended elementary schools in New York and Westfield, N.J., graduated from Westfield High School in 1944 and Douglass College in 1948. She received her Master of Library Science from the University of Maine in 1970.
Lou was employed as a YWCA Y-Teen Director in Yonkers, N.Y.; Vermont Department of Mental Health Psychiatric Social Worker Trainee; Personnel Department at Bell Labs, Summit, N.J.; Douglass College Assistant to Dean of Education and Department of Admissions and later the University of Maine.
In 1949, Lou married David Dean of North Branch, N.J. They settled in Maine in 1966. She and her husband were both employed at the University of Maine Darling Marine Center in Walpole where Lou was the Marine Science Librarian from 1970-1997. The newly built library was later named after her.
Along with being an avid reader, Lou enjoyed gardening, sailing, crossword puzzles and cribbage, she and her husband kept a running tally of scores for many years. Lou was a former member of the Miles Memorial Hospital League, the Douglass College Alumni Association, and the International Association of Marine Science Librarians.
Lou moved to Charlottesville in 2004 and became a member of the Senior Center and ACAC. She especially enjoyed the friendships formed while participating in water aerobics classes, the Monday morning group, and the Scrabble group.
She was predeceased by her parents; brother, John W. Hendy Jr.; husband, David Dean; and son, David R. Dean.
She leaves son, John Dean and wife, Lois of Charlottesville, Va.; daughter, Nancy Dean and husband Paul Johnson of Westbrook; and grandchildren, Ryan Dean, wife Rachel, and their son, Henry David Dean, of Gorham, Katie Williams and husband Drew of Charlottesville, Va., and Matthew Dean of Charlottesville.
Mrs. Dean suggested that in lieu of flowers, you consider making a donation in her memory to the charity of your choice.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m., Sun., Jan. 20, 2019 at Grace Community Church, Charlottesville, Va.
