Louise S. Weiss, of Friendship, died April 14 at The Lincoln Home in Newcastle.
She began her journey through life on March 30, 1921 in New York City, N.Y., the daughter of Alwin G. Stieglitz and Annette Weinman Stieglitz, of White Plains, N.Y. She attended Mills College for Women in Oakland, Cal. and was in the Army Air Corps during WWII, stationed in New Jersey.
She married and was the mother of William S. “Billy” Weiss who predeceased her in 1986. She was also predeceased by a sister, Alice Anne Jacobson, who died Dec. 7, 1973.
In 1972 Louise purchased her home in Friendship, where she resided for the remainder of her life. She was known as a caring, generous and charitable person, who would do good deeds for friends, acquaintances and strangers residing in the community and Mid-Coast Maine, generally anonymously.
Louise will be remembered as an outspoken woman who was a harsh critic of nuclear proliferation and her concern for the environment.
Many of Louise’s special friendships resulted from her association with the Bancroft School in Owls Head. In 1998 she established The Billy Weiss Memorial Foundation, a charitable organization designed to assist handicapped children and other disabled persons in the Mid-Coast area. Louise served on the Board of Directors of the Foundation, and was its President until the time of her death.
She is survived by a step-daughter, Ellen Ash of Great Falls, Va.; brother-in-law, Dr. Marcus Jacobson of Chevy Chase, Md.; nieces, Arlene J. Karesh and Lyn J. Beer; nephew, Dr. Roy Jacobson; sister-in-law, Evelyn Jacobson; and many special friends.
At Louise’s request there will be no funeral, but family members and friends are planning a memorial service, 11 a.m., Fri., May 23 at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro.
