Mabel L. Gamage, 99, of Boothbay, died April 8 at the Gregory Wing at St. Andrews Village with her family by her side.
She was born Jan. 11, 1911 in Boothbay, the daughter of Arthur and Grace Dodge of Boothbay, She attended Boothbay schools, graduating in the class of 1929. In 1935, she married Lawrence J. Gamage of Newagen.
In 1952, Mabel went to work for her brother, Erwin Dodge, at Dodge’s Shoe Store in Boothbay Harbor where she worked for many years. After the store closed, she went to work operating the St. Andrews Hospital coffee shop. After retiring from the coffee shop, she worked evenings at the Boothbay Information Center where she enjoyed chatting with all the people she met.
Mabel became a member of the Crescent Chapter #54, Order of the Eastern Star and was named a life member on Feb. 14, 1984. She held many chapter offices while a member of the organization.
She was also a member of the United Methodist Church of Boothbay Harbor and was an active member of the United Methodist Women’s Circle 3. She was also a volunteer at the St. Andrews Hospital Auxiliary thrift shop after retiring.
Mabel loved cooking, gardening, doing crossword puzzles, reading and knitting. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence; son, Dwight; stepdaughter, Barbara Matheson and husband Albert; brothers, Dwight, Erwin and Arthur Dodge; sisters, Florence Harrold, Alice Ouelette, Polly Robinson, Francis Harper and Edith Dodge.
Mabel is survived by her daughter, Carol A. Pinkham of Boothbay; granddaughters, Cindy A. Pearce and husband Brady and Deborah P. Todte and husband Robert; grandson, Brian M. Pinkham; great-grandchildren, Jason and Joshua Pearce, Lincoln and Nate Sample, and Shelby Pinkham; great-great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Pearce; sister, Grace Calhoun, all of Boothbay; and sisters-in-law, Emily Blake of Norway and Virginia Gamage of Boothbay Harbor.
Memorial service to celebrate Mabel’s life 3 p.m., Fri., April 16 at the United Methodist Church, Boothbay Harbor, with the Rev. Carol A. Stevens officiating.
