Madeline Jean (Mitchell) Hobbs, 93, of Damariscotta, passed away on the evening of Dec. 21 at the LincolnHealth-Miles Campus, from complications arising from a series of strokes.
Maddy was born in Everett, Mass. on May 28, 1925, the only child of T.A. and Muriel Mitchell. She grew up in Weymouth, Mass., graduating from Weymouth High School, Katherine Gibbs School, and much later (1971) from Simmons College.
Maddy met her future husband, John, while he was stationed at the South Weymouth Naval Air Station and she was still in high school. They married on Aug. 26, 1944.
Together, Maddy and John started Hobbs Studio in East Weymouth in 1948. They became well known photographers, locally and nationally, and had countless photographer friends all over the world.
Nothing meant more to Maddy than tending her flower gardens at the cottage on Riverview Road in Pemaquid. Until only a few years ago, a summer highlight was “the bridesmaids’ weekend.” Her bridesmaids, Audrey, Elsie, and Ann, and their husbands came to Maine for a weekend. The “girls” had been best friends since childhood, walking to grade school together.
Maddy truly lived a good and full life. At the time of John’s death in 2016, they had been married for 72 years. She will be missed by her son, Kimball and wife Robin of Buxton; grandson, Benjamin and wife Sara of Avon Lake, Ohio; granddaughter, Julie Currid and husband John of South Euclid, Ohio; and great-grandchildren, Amelia and Emerson Hobbs and Emily and JAC Currid. She also leaves behind all of her friends from Chase Point in Damariscotta, and the Bristol Mills Congregational Church.
Services will be held this coming summer when friends, neighbors, and relatives retreat back to Maine.
