Mahlon A. Libby Jr., 61, of Newcastle, passed away on the morning of Jan. 29 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta. Born on Aug. 12, 1949 in Hanover, N.H., he was the son of Mahlon Sr. and Mildred Libby.
Mahlon grew up in Wiscasset and Bath and attended Morse High School in Bath. Upon finishing school he enlisted in the U.S. Marines and served two tours in Vietnam. Upon his honorable discharge from the Marines, he returned to Maine and on Oct. 11, 1980, he married Dondra Cressey.
The couple raised their family in Newcastle and eventually would move into the house that he built himself. He worked for several different saw mills in the area where he would cut the trees to get ready for milling. For several years, he also worked as a clam digger and a stern man on a lobster boat.
He loved being outdoors and was an avid camper, but his biggest love was fishing and hunting. He was also an avid reader and particularly loved books by Dean Koontz and James Patterson.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Dondra Libby of Newcastle; children, Mahlon Libby III of Carrabassett Valley, Jennifer Libby of Damariscotta, Megan Libby of Gardiner and Earl Libby of Newcastle; stepchildren, Stella Rich of Massachusetts, Sondra Bean and husband Frank of Damariscotta, Robert Greenleaf IV of Wiscasset and Michael Greenleaf and wife Dawn of Damariscotta; sister, Mildred Earlbach of Bath; brother, Charles Smith of Texas; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Service to remember Mahlon 2 p.m., Fri., Feb. 4 at the Wells-Hussey American Legion Post 42 in Damariscotta.
