Margaret Diana (Heatley) Wadlow, 78, died March 13 at Greentree Manor in Waterford, Conn. Margaret, affectionately known as “Mag,” was born on Nov. 11, 1935 at the Home Memorial in New London to the late Charles (Jack) Edward Heatley Jr. and Catherine (Peg) Boyer Heatley. She was married to James W. Wadlow Jr. on July 10, 1954 in the Little Church Around the Corner in Manhattan, N.Y.
Margaret was a 1953 graduate of Robert E. Fitch High School in Groton, Conn., and worked briefly at Charles Pfizer & Company’s Groton plant where she and her husband met. After raising her family, she was also employed by Compucon and then Potomac Management at the U.S. Coast Guard station at Avery Point, where she worked in Marine Fire and Safety and then as a data entry clerk.
Since 1958, Margaret was a member of the First Church of Christ in New London, where she served as a deaconess and Sunday school teacher for 20 years. She was also a member, and later chairwoman, of the Flower Committee for more than 15 years.
Margaret had a passion for gardening and landscaping and was a former member of the Waterford Garden Club. She bowled on a Pfizer team and played tennis for many years. She was also very talented at needlepoint and sewing.
Margaret and her husband traveled and cruised extensively to places like the Caribbean, South America, Cape Horn, Chile, Egypt, Greece, the Greek Islands, Alaska, Australia, and New Zealand. She also spent a great deal of time with her family at their summer home in North Edgecomb, where her favorite things to do were take boat rides, and relax on the porch and read.
Margaret was predeceased by her husband who passed away on April 26, 2009; and brother, Charles E. Heatley who died on July 9, 2011.
She is survived by daughter, Joyce W. Finn of Waterford, Conn.; daughter, Kathe W. Yost and husband George P. Yost of Waterford, Conn.; son, James W. Wadlow III of Waterford, Conn.; granddaughter, Gretchen Yost Lally, husband Michael D. Lally and sons Christopher and Sean of Waterford; granddaughters, Meghan Yost of Hamden, Conn., and Jacquelyn Yost of Waterford, Conn.; and brothers, Robert E. Heatley of Quaker Hill, Conn., and Thomas B. Heatley of Eugene, Ore.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Sat., June 7 at the Edgecomb Congregational Church, 15 Cross Point Rd., Edgecomb. A private burial will follow.
