Margaret Moore Myers, affectionately known as “Margo,” passed away Jan. 12 in Vero Beach, Fla.
She was born in 1912, in Payette, Ida., the daughter of Orrin and Margaret Williams Bussey.
She grew up in Portland, Ore., and attended the University of Colorado.
Margo’s first career was as a musician. She played the violin and viola professionally in several venues throughout the United States.
After she moved to Darien, Conn., she was one of the people who was instrumental in organizing the Stamford Symphony.
Margot’s first marriage ended in divorce and left her with two daughters to raise on her own. At this point, she knew she had to find a career that was more lucrative and offered better hours than the music profession.
She worked as a secretary for Civil Defense, gave tennis lessons, made casseroles to order, and in her spare time, worked for a small advertising firm.
Margo got into the dress business almost by accident. While her daughter Marcy was in high school she worked at a dress shop. One day during the Christmas rush in 1959, she stopped to pick up Marcy, and got chatting with the owner who was considering selling her shop. Margo took over the shop on Feb. 1, 1960.
In addition to her shop in Darien, Conn., Margo owned two dress and gift shops in Maine: one was in Camden, and the other in Damariscotta.
Last January Margo married Ogden “Okie” Myers, a retired bank official.
Margo had many interests and hobbies, one of which was photography. She was a gourmet cook, and liked to garden, and she continued to play tennis.
She was predeceased by her infant son, Timothy Moore; and husband, Ogden “Okie” Myers in 1992.
Survivors include her daughters, Susan Murphy of Darien, Conn., and Marcy van der Kieft and husband Peter of Rockport; grandchildren, Aliza Murphy of Darien, Conn., Jacqueline Maxwell and husband Walter of Trumble, Conn., Paige Jordan and husband William of Monroe, Conn., Christopher van der Kieft of Brookline, Mass., Megan Carozza and husband Frank of Charlestown, Mass.; great-grandchildren, William Jordan and Carly Jordan; and beloved dog, Sammy.
Memorial service was held Jan. 20 at Strunk Funeral Home, Vero Beach, Fla., with the Rev. Valerie A. Balius, of Trinity Episcopal Church officiating.
In lieu of flowers, Margo’s family requests that donations be sent to the Humane Society of Vero & Indian River, 6230 77th St., Vero Beach, FL 32967, and the VNA Hospice Foundation, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960.
