Margie Laugel Erickson, 95, passed away peacefully on the morning of Aug. 11. She lived in Nobleboro and considered Maine her chosen home. As her health declined, she remained confident that the same God who had been there for her over her long life would welcome her Home and into His loving arms.
Margie was born in North Bergen, N.J. on June 12, 1921. She was the oldest of three girls. She married Edwin E. Erickson in 1945 and they had two children, Ellen and Skip. She worked at SMA Fathers, Society of African Missions in Tenafly, N.J. She was a charter member of the VFW Post 6467 in Bergenfield, N.J. She volunteered for the Boy Scouts of America and Girl Scouts of America, led VFW paper drives, class field trips, was a Sunday school teacher, and a choir member. Her desire to serve others was proven as, just two weeks before she died, Margie was at her post at the registration desk at Miles Hospital.
Margie moved to Nobleboro in 1979 after vacationing here for several years. She had been a volunteer at the Miles Hospital League for 27 years. She attended Water of Life Lutheran Church.
Margie’s passion for food was such an integral part of her, and her expression of love, that it’s impossible to think of her without the memory of sharing a meal that she made, a cake that she had just baked, or her slipping jars of homemade jam in your bag. If all the people that Margie prepared a loving meal for were seated in one place, there would not be a hall big enough to hold them all. She was also an avid birdwatcher, talented flower arranger, reader, Yahtzee player, and loved to give big, warm hugs.
Margie was preceded in death her husband, Edwin E. Erickson; and sisters, Lorraine Laugel Shea, and Millicent Laugel Thomas.
Margie is survived by daughter, Ellen Erickson Whalley and husband John; son, George Skip Erickson and wife Cynthia; grandchildren, Sunshine Erickson, Nicolas Erickson, and “adopted” grandchildren, John Colburn, Emily Thompson, Matt Whalley and Ben and Darcy Whalley; and countless other “children” who called her Gramma, Ma or Mamma E; cousin, Marcia Ireland; and nieces and nephews, Karen Shea, Walter Shea, Alan and Ruthann Shea, and Alison and Richard LaMagna; and grandnieces and nephews, Walter Shea, Carley Shea, Alan Shea, Nicolas Shea, Patrick Shea, Luke LaMagna, Peter LaMagna, and Grace LaMagna.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Sat., Sept. 10 at The Assembly of God Church in Damariscotta, where a reception will follow the service until 4 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, she would be honored by any donations made to the Miles Hospital League, PO Box 503, Damariscotta, ME 04543; or knowing you sent flowers to someone that you loved.
