Marguerite (Margo) Loehr Kornahrens, 96, died on April 8 at Riverside at Chase Point in Damariscotta, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Margo, the daughter of Albert and Freida Loehr, was born in Roslindale, Mass. on Sept. 26, 1917. She earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Boston State College (now UMass Boston) and began both her teaching career and doctorate program in 1940.
At the outbreak of WWII she enlisted in the U.S. Navy and became a WAVE officer. She served until May 1945 as a supply officer at the Boston Navy Yard where she met her husband-to-be, Howard, a destroyer gunnery officer.
Howard and Margo were married in 1944, and after the war, moved to Hohokus, N.J. where they lived for 37 years. Margo raised three children and was a high school honors biology teacher for 20 years. During her teaching career, she won several National Science Foundation fellowships and received other awards.
In 1982 Margo retired to South Bristol, where she and her husband had a home. Gardening was the major passion of her retirement years. She was also an avid reader. She volunteered at both the Bristol and Rutherford libraries, and for many years managed the treasure table at the annual Miles Hospital Rummage Sale.
She was predeceased by her husband Howard; and son, Howard Kornahrens II.
Margo is survived by her daughter, Holly Emmons and husband Robert of South Bristol; daughter, Heather Hendrix and husband Philip of Brighton, N.Y.; and grandchildren, Lee Emmons of Newcastle, and Casey and Kelly Kornahrens of Port Washington, N.Y.
A private celebration of her life will be held at Riverside at Chase Point.
