Maria Cortes Poore, 83, of Ocean Point, died July 5 at her residence after a period of failing health. She is the widow of Paul “Sam” Poore, Sr.
Maria was born May 28, 1926 in Columbia, South America, the daughter of Sophia Murcia Cortes, and attended schools in Columbia.
In 1950, she emigrated to the United States, settling in New York. During the summers, she would travel to Ocean Point, where she met her future husband, Paul “Sam” Poore, Sr. They were married in 1979, and made their home in Ocean Point.
Maria was a communicant of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, a member of the Garden Club and the YMCA. She loved to knit, bird watch, and enjoy the wildlife that lived behind her home.
She is predeceased by husband; stepson, Paul Poore, Jr.; and stepdaughter, Paula P. Doble.
Survivors include her daughter, Alice Murza and husband Michael of New Hyde Park, N.Y.; grandchildren, Maria Speciale of Lake Grove, N.Y., and Donna Murza of New Hyde Park, N.Y.; great-grandchildren, Julianna Murza of New Hyde Park, N.Y., and James Speciale of Lake Grove, N.Y.; step grandchildren Robin Doble, Heather Doble, Timothy Doble, and Gina Murza of Brightwaters, N.Y.; and step great-granddaughter, Daniella Nieves of Brightwaters, N.Y.
Friends are invited to visit with the family 4-8 p.m., Wed., July 8 at the Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Rd., Boothbay. Mass of Christian burial 10 a.m., Thurs., July 10 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Boothbay Harbor. Interment will be in the Maine Veterans Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta.
