Marie Clark passed peacefully at sunset March 23. She led an active, vibrant life as an artist, a runner and a swimmer. For the last 30 years she has split her time between Louds Island (in Muscongus Bay) and Nevis (in the Windward Islands of the Caribbean).
In the early 1970s she was politically active as a member of the Women’s Movement. While living in Wiscasset, she ran the art gallery, Wood, Water and Wildthings. In Nevis she supported and helped to develop native artists with her Gallery of Nevis Art.
At age 50 she participated in the first all women’s Outward Bound program at Hurricane Island. At age 60 she reprised the group with a canoe adventure down the Allagash. At age 78 she set a record as the oldest to swim the 2½ miles of ocean from Nevis to St. Kitts.
She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon Clark of East Boothbay.
She is survived by the five sons from her first marriage, and five grandchildren: Mattthew Monaco and Patricia Denzler of Mt. Holly, N.J. and their daughter Katherine; Albert Monaco and Christine Anderson of Alna and their children, Curt and Suzanne; Marc Monaco of Round Pond; Michael and Carolyn Monaco of Brookline, Mass. and their sons Oliver and James; and Christopher and Lynn Monaco of Framingham, Mass.; and long time friends, Olive Pierce, Judy Blakinton and Mary Wentworth.
A memorial service will be held this summer on Louds Island.
