Marion Louise Kennedy Calderwood, 96, passed away April 14 at Knox Center for Long-term Care in Rockland. She had recently moved there from the Anderson Inn at Quarry Hill in Camden.
Marion was born March 13, 1911 in Washington, a daughter of the late George and Carrie Nye Kennedy.
She was a graduate of Union High School, class of 1929. On Aug. 10 of that same year, Marion married Frank Calderwood and together they made their home on the Calderwood family farm in Union, working side by side, caring for their Holstein dairy herd, gardens and haying. In later years they turned to raising poultry. In 1963 they sold part of the family homestead and built a smaller home on the remaining property.
For several winters they worked as caretakers on estates in Florida.
For many years the couple were involved with the Union Fair. Marion had her own booth where she exhibited her fruits and vegetables while Frank managed the horse pulling events. When the couple ran their farm, she was an active member of the Farm Bureau Association and Seven Tree Grange.
After Frank passed away in 1985, Marion continued to live in the home they had built in 1972.
She enjoyed hiking in places like Monhegan Island and Isle au Haut with family members when they vacationed in Maine. She also enjoyed traveling and went on many bus trips with her church group and the Union Senior Citizens, where she was a charter member.
Marion will be remembered for her sense of humor and as a gracious hostess who always had something to offer her friends and family from her kitchen. She was known for her wonderful baking and her “sweet tooth”. Marion took great pride in her home, which was always immaculate.
She attended the West Rockport Baptist Church for many years. Always willing to help, Marion was actively involved with the church’s missionary outreach. In her later years, she considered her ministry was folding bulletins for the weekly services. She was a former member and Sunday school teacher of the Union People’s United Methodist Church.
She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Frank B. Calderwood, and sisters, Lillian Messer and Mae Swift.
