Marjorie Bean Scott, 95, of Augusta, died the evening of Dec. 29 in her own home, with her beloved “Kitty Kat” in her lap.
Marjorie was born Jan. 4, 1919 in Milford, Conn. to the late John Parker and Lois Blake Bean. She was raised on a farm in Mt. Vernon by her grandparents John Elmer and Carrie Belle Johnson Bean.
Marjorie attended a one-room schoolhouse, the Cressey School, for grades one through eight. She worked a year on the farm, then boarded with Bert and “Auntie” Robinson while attending Monmouth Academy which was 25 miles from her home. She graduated in 1939 from MA where she excelled in the new Home Economics classes. On Aug. 2 this year, she attended Monmouth Academy’s Alumni Association annual meeting as the oldest living alumni of 75 years.
On Nov. 29, 1939, Marjorie married Hubert Glenn Scott. After Hubert retired from the Togus VA they spent several years traveling in their motorhome to all 48 contiguous states. Camping with the family was a big part of their life; a summer would not be complete without their annual trip to Sebago State Park.
Marjorie was also known as “The Goose Lady” because of the cement goose in front of her house which she dressed daily for over 20 years for the enjoyment of passersby.
Along with her grandparents, parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Lola Belle Minard and one grandson, Jeffery Kinkade.
Surviving are children, Sally (Glenn) Kinkade of Coshocton, Ohio, Glen H. (Charlene) Scott of Bolton, Conn., and Linda (Jim) McMullen of Oakland; step-brothers, Ted (Polly) Blake of Mt. Vernon, and Harley (Marjorie) Ward of The Villages, Fla. Marjorie was like a mother to Jeffrey Champagne of Clearwater, Fla. and like a second mother to Lurana McCarron of Saratoga Springs, N.Y. and Carol Arsenault of Dresden. Marjorie had eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Calling hours will be held from 5-7 p.m., Tues., Jan. 6. Funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Wed., Jan. 7 at the funeral home. The Rev. Jo Anne Hilton, pastor of the South Jefferson United Baptist Church will be officiating.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution can be sent to Penney Memorial United Baptist Church, 393 Water St., Augusta, ME 04330, where Marjorie was a member for over 60 years.
