Martha Ann Baganz (Marty), 88, of Charlottesville, Va., died on Nov. 10 due to complications associated with Myelodysplastic Syndrome. She was a lifelong summer resident of New Harbor.
Martha Ann was born in Bryn Mawr, Penn. on Dec. 8, 1923, the daughter of Roland Paddock Kelley and Pauline Helen Bates. She grew up in Canton, Ohio, graduating from Lehman High School in 1942. She received her Bachelors degree in Journalism from the University of Pennsylvania in 1946. While at Penn, she met her husband, Herbert M. Baganz. While her husband finished medical school, and did his postgraduate training in Philadelphia, Marty worked for the University of Pennsylvania and also taught in the Philadelphia public school system.
In 1951 her husband’s medical practice took them to Wilmington, Del. where they stayed for 25 years, and where they raised their four children. After Delaware, they relocated to the Washington, D.C. area where Marty worked in the Development Office for The Holton-Arms School, and in development for the United States Tennis Association.
Following the death of her husband in 1989, Marty moved to Charlottesville, Va. to be near her daughter and grandchildren. She remained in Charlottesville until her death.
Throughout her life, Marty was deeply involved in community service activities, contributing her enthusiastic efforts to many organizations, including The Delaware Museum of Fine Arts, Winterthur Museum, The Delaware State Hospital, The Junior League of Wilmington, Wilmington Friends School, The American Friend Service Committee and The Virginia Chamber Orchestra. She was also a member of The Wilmington Monthly Meeting of Friends. Marty also had a love of adventure, and during her life had traveled to Europe, Africa, Asia and Antarctica.
Marty was predeceased by her parents; husband; and son, Andrew Baganz.
She is survived by her children, Bruce P. Baganz of Houston, Tex., Barbara Baganz Simpson of Charlottesville, Va. and Mark D. Baganz of Annapolis, Md.; and grandchildren, Ethan Simpson, Blake Simpson, August Baganz and Elizabeth Baganz.
Interment 11 a.m., Sat., Nov. 19 at the Harrington Cemetery in Pemaquid.
