Mary Anne King, 92, long-time resident of South Waldoboro, died peacefully on Dec. 11 at Chase Point Assisted Living in Damariscotta.
Born on June 18, 1921, Mary Anne studied at Wellesley College and took a degree in early childhood education from Wheelock College. She devoted her working years to teaching. She was a fine musician who delighted pre-schoolers with her autoharp and friends and family with her piano-playing which ranged from Mozart to Scott Joplin. Her wonderful warmth and intelligence touched hundreds of children directly, and on a larger stage for good, she was one of the pioneers of the Head Start program in the 1960s.
In 1945, she married the noted physicist Donald D. King (1919-1984) whom she had known since grade school. Mary Anne and Don had four children, Stuart, Alison, Mary Scotland, and James; four grandchildren, Jocelyn, Graham, Dinah, and Eileen; and two great-grandchildren, Sage and Kent Patrick, all surviving. Mary Anne’s friends and family will remember her quick wit, her contagious sense of the joy of life and, most of all, the endless loving kindness that she gave so freely and widely.
There will be a graveside memorial celebration of Mary Anne’s life this spring at Sweetlands Cemetery.
