Mary Catherine McDonald Lakeman, 87, of Southport, passed away Nov. 8.
Born in Dorchester, Mass., Aug. 24, 1921, the oldest of six children of John McDonald and Margaret Hamrock McDonald. In 1923, her family moved to Newton Highlands, Mass. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1939 and worked at several insurance underwriters in Boston until 1945.
Married to Weldon Lakeman in August 1944, they made their home in Southport after WWII. In October 1965, they bought the Harbor Motor Court, which they operated summers until 1982. Prior to owning the motel, Mary was very active with the District Nurse Association, serving as president, the Southport Mother’s Club, and the St. Andrews Hospital Auxiliary. She then became involved with the Southport Historical Committee; as an alternate on the Southport Planning Board; and a Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church.
She enjoyed traveling and would make extended stays with her husband during his overseas assignments, but her passion was playing contract bridge.
Mary was predeceased by her husband in 1982.
She is survived by three children, Rae Lakeman Hershey and companion Ed Miller of Lutherville, Md., Martin Lakeman and wife Elizabeth Lakeman of Phippsburg, and Carol Lakeman Larkin and husband Ed Larkin of Southport; four grandchildren, Patrick Lakeman of Yokosuka, Japan, Edrick Larkin of Natick, Mass., Theodore Lakeman of Portland, and Weldon Larkin of Southport; one great-grandson, James Lakeman of Yokosuka, Japan; three sisters, Margaret Dooley of Canton, Mass., Nancy Flynn and husband Jim of Worcester, Mass., and Rosalie Killion and husband Joseph of Falmouth, Mass.; and two brothers, John McDonald and wife Ethelyn of Prospect, Ky., and Henry McDonald of Littleton, N.H.
Visiting hours 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Wed., Nov. 12 at the Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 979 Wiscasset Rd., Boothbay. Mass of Christian burial 11 a.m., Thurs., Nov. 13 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Boothbay Harbor. Interment will be in the Union Cemetery, Southport.
