Mary Elizabeth Smith, 64, of South China, passed away suddenly on Jan. 4 at her home. She was born on July 26, 1946 in Augusta to Edgar and Doris Steele.
Mary graduated from Hale-Dale High School where she was a member of the cheerleading squad and basketball team. She worked in the nursing field and also for the State of Maine. She was employed at WABK for many years and at Home Vision Video. She served on the Weeks Mills Volunteer Fire Department. She enjoyed gardening and the many birds that she fed in her yard. She mastered the art of tole painting and won a blue ribbon for her one and only entry ever at Windsor Fair. She and her husband enjoyed camping in Maine, but her favorite enjoyment came from spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends.
Mary was a very kind and giving person and would always go out of her way to help her family and friends.
Mary was predeceased by her first husband William L. Betts of Hallowell; and her parents of Hallowell.
Mary is survived by her husband of 28 years, Phillip G. Smith; daughters, Faylene Williams and companion Bruce Tillson of Sidney, Laurie Williams and husband Alpha of Chelsea and Billie-Jo Greeley and husband Greg of Farmingdale; son-in-law, Edward Williams of North Anson; seven wonderful grandchildren who loved her very much, Mary Estes of North Anson, William Morton of Augusta, Sarah Andrews of Farmingdale, Alex Soucy of Windsor, Todd Penney of Farmingdale, Kenney Penney of Sidney and Jacob Penney of Farmingdale; step-grandchildren whom she was very close to, Alpha Williams Jr. of Jefferson, Michael Williams of Iowa, Felicia Elliot of Augusta and Adam Greeley of Farmingdale; and several great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Mon., Jan., 10 at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner where a memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Tues., Jan 11.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made directly to the funeral home.
