Mary Ellen (McGuire) Mulkern, 87, passed away June 28 in Augusta.
Mrs. Mulkern was born in Augusta on Feb. 2, 1923, the eldest daughter of Leroy and Nellie (Ouellette) McGuire. She lived in Damariscotta for the past 12 years after living 40 years in the Brewster / North Salem, N.Y. area.
A 1942 graduate of Cony High School in Augusta, Mary was a very devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Mary was an excellent seamstress, cook, and homemaker. She was always baking or making something for her family and friends and her home was spotless.
Mary was a long-time volunteer for the Putnam County (N.Y.) Hospital in Carmel, N.Y. where she logged over 5000 hours.
She was proud of her Irish and French Canadian heritage. But mostly she was proud of her family. She loved spending time with her family and relatives and their well-being was the only thing that concerned her. She especially loved babies and children. Being around the young ones made her the happiest.
She enjoyed her sports with her husband and family. She was a Cony High School cheerleader but it wasn’t until her later years when her children moved away that she took up golf which she quickly excelled in. She also loved to walk, either around the track or around the mall. She enjoyed watching pro golf, the Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots, Mets and Jets.
Mrs. Mulkern was recently predeceased by her beloved husband of 57 years, Alfred E. (“Pat”) Mulkern.
She leaves three children and their spouses, daughter Kay Gilbert of Nobleboro and husband Jerry; sons, Michael Patrick of Houston, Tex. and wife Joan, and Mark Edward of Pittsburgh, Penn. and wife Mary; sister, Margaret (Peggy) Paulin of Augusta; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
