Mary F. Harrington, 87, of Bremen, passed away at Miles Memorial Hospital on May 27. Born in Lineville, Ala., she was the daughter of Norman and Mary Elizabeth (Rice) Fetner.
Mary grew up in Alabama and graduated from high school there. Shortly after graduation she enlisted in the U.S. Navy. She was a veteran of WWII, and while working as a machinist for the Navy, she met another sailor, Winslow Harrington, whom she would marry in 1945.
After their discharge from the service, the couple lived briefly in Holden, Mass. before moving to Visalia, Cal. They lived there for several years, but moved to Maine in July of 1966. She lived in Bremen until her death.
She worked as a bookkeeper and office manager for the Nash Telephone Company and Louis Doe before starting a career as an accountant for the State of Maine.
Mary retired from the State in 1985, and in her retirement she loved knitting, reading and crocheting and was an avid gardener. She also loved computer games and would get quite enthusiastic while playing them. She was a member of Wells-Hussey Post 42 of the American Legion in Damariscotta.
She was predeceased by her parents and husband, as well as two brothers, Clifford and Clinton Fetner.
She is survived by her children, Frederick Harrington of Bremen, Cynthia DeLong of Buxton, Patricia Bryant of Nobleboro and David Harrington of Hampden; sisters, Martha Phelps of Mission, Tex. and Flossie Goodman of Piedmont, Mo.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Graveside service 1 p.m., Thurs., June 3 at the Evergreen Cemetery in Bremen.
