Mary-Helen Hardie, 94, of Union, died July 1 at her home. She was born Sept. 16, 1916 in Eastport to John and Helen Wadsworth Raye. She grew up in Eastport and graduated from SHEAD High School in Eastport. She graduated from University of Maine at Orono and she attended University of Michigan for her masters. She married Alexander Hardie on Nov. 6, 1943.
She taught math and science for many years. She taught at Eastport High School, University of Maine at Orono, Union High School and lastly at Medomak Valley High School in Waldoboro. She was a member of the Medomak Valley Education Association, and was a very active member of the Union Historical Society. She also volunteered in the library at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport.
She helped her husband plant over 1000 apple trees on the Hardie Farm in Union where they were well known for their apple cider. She enjoyed her family, taking walks, and watching the birds and turkeys from her home.
She was predeceased by her husband, Alexander Hardie; brothers, John, George and Wadsworth Raye; and sister, Augusta Bromley.
She is survived by her daughters, Mary Heathcote and husband Walter of Nobleboro and Carol Peasley of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, Thomas Goodridge and wife Janet of Deerfield, N.H. and Karen Martin and husband Patrick of Lexington, Mass.; great-grandchildren, Jack Goodridge of Deerfield, N.H. and Mackenzie and Caroline Martin of Lexington, Mass.; brother, Alexander Raye of State College, Penn.; sister-in-law, Bessie Hersom and husband Bob of Camden; and several nieces and nephews.
Service to celebrate Mary-Helen’s life 11 a.m., Thurs., July 7 at the Faith Baptist Church, 144 Mills Rd., Newcastle with Rev. David O’Donnell officiating. A reception will follow the service at the church. Committal service 2 p.m. at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta.
