Mary Pinkham, 86, of Southport, formerly of Mouse Island and Spruce Point, passed away peacefully at home on Nov. 10 with her family by her side.
She was born Nov. 27, 1919, at Emersen Hospital in Boston, Mass., the daughter of William F. Ives and Florence V. Kelley Ives.
Mary attended schools in Lynn, Mass., and graduated from English High School in 1937.
After graduation, she worked for General Electric, and played shortstop for the Lynn Sporties. She later worked on a passenger train where she met her lifelong husband, Erwin “Chick” Pinkham. They married on Aug. 31, 1944 in Lynn, Mass.
Upon returning to the Boothbay area, where she summered as a child and he was from, Chick and Mary were the caretakers of Mouse Island. They lived on the island year-round until they built their family home on Pinkham’s Cove in Spruce Point.
Mary enjoyed bowling and was a member of the Periwinkles Bowling Team. She was a cast extra in the movie, Carousel, when it was filmed in the harbor. She loved golfing, the beach, and was a major fan of the Boston Red Sox.
She enjoyed working and held various jobs around the area until the age of 82.
She was predeceased by her husband, Chick in 2001, after 57 years of marriage; her parents; and brother, William ” Bill” Ives of Melbourne, Fla.
Survivors include three children, Marcy E. Pinkham, Erwin “Jay” Pinkham Jr. and wife Cindy, and William “Pinky” Pinkham; grandchildren, Larni Pinkham Bernard and husband Michael, Matthew Pinkham and wife Sheri, and Jessica H. Pinkham; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A private family service will be held in the spring.
