Melva G. James, 91, of Wiscasset, died on Oct. 1 at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta.
She was born in Lewiston on March 29, 1915, the daughter of Frederick and Gertrude (Harriman) Bixby.
On Nov. 15, 1931 she married Ernest Carlton James and they resided in Dresden until moving to Wiscasset in 1953. She helped her husband on the farm.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, her cats and dogs, the outdoors, and digging worms with her husband. She was an avid painter.
Mrs. James was predeceased by her husband, Ernest Carlton James, on July 6, 2001; two sons, Franklin James in 1991, and Charles James in 1988; four bothers, Wilmer Bixby, John Bixby, Arthur Bixby and Leslie Bixby; and one sister, Frances Grover.
She is survived by four sons, Ernest Edward “Ed” James of Inverness, Fla., Wilmer “Bill” James of Wiscasset, George James of Dresden, and Kevin James of Wiscasset; four daughters, Iona Pinkham of Woolwich, Frances Cray of Richmond, Mamie Chapman of Dresden, and Valerie Hinkley of Wiscasset; 61 grandchildren; 165 +/ – great grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., Wed., Oct. 4 at Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal St., Wiscasset.
Funeral Service 2 p.m., Thurs., Oct. 5 at the Woolwich Wiscasset Baptist Church with Pastor Wally Staples officiating.
Burial will follow at Forrest Hill Cemetery in Dresden.
