Melvin E. Simmons, 86, of Cushing, died March 11 at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport. He was born Dec. 14, 1926 on Bremen Long Island to Melvin and Lottie McLain Simmons.
His family moved their home and store off of Bremen Long Island to Hatchet Cove in Friendship in the 1920s. He worked as a lobsterman and seiner all of his life up and down the coast of Maine.
He married Murtel Wellman Simmons in 1958. He was very knowledgeable about fixing things and would often lend a hand to help his friends. He was a family man and especially enjoyed taking the family on boat trips to fish for mackerel or to have a picnic. He enjoyed telling stories about fishing and life on the sea.
He was predeceased by a son, Michael Simmons.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Murtel W. Simmons of Cushing; son, Steven M. Simmons of Jefferson; sister, Glenys Harrington of Damariscotta; and nephews, nieces and cousins.
A private burial service will be held in the Shuman Cemetery in Waldoboro.
