Mervyn S. Parmenter, 84, of Whitefield, passed away suddenly on Jan. 4 at the Veterans Hospital at Togus. He was born in Weeks Mills in 1929 to the late Stanley O. and Grace H. (Haskell) Parmenter.
Mervyn was a U.S. Marine and served in both the North Atlantic and Mediterranean areas from 1947-1950. After receiving an honorable discharge, he worked for several years at Hudson Pulp and Paper in Augusta. He worked his way through college and earned his degree. He helped create the Augusta Pulp and Sulfite Credit Union where he remained treasurer for several years. The credit union is now the Capital Area Federal Credit Union. After 25 years, Mervyn retired from the State of Maine as the Director of the Income Tax Division in Taxation.
Upon retiring, he enjoyed cross country trips with his wife and friends where they all shared wonderful views, many experiences and lots of laughs. Mervyn and his buddies built a camp on Square Lake in Aroostook County where they spent 40 plus years fishing, hunting, story telling, pulling pranks, playing poker and enjoying the company of friends and family.
Mervyn enjoyed woodworking during his golden years and built many items such as kitchen tables, end tables, totem poles and benches. He could never make just one because once someone in the family saw his work, they asked for a reproduction.
He loved York Peppermint Patties and hated broccoli.
Mervyn was predeceased by a brother, Maynard Parmenter; and sister, Mickey Spear.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Madeline R. (Doyon) Parmenter of Whitefield; daughter, Marlene Richards and husband Jon of Windsor; brother, Roydon Parmenter and son Bobby of Augusta; sister-in-law, Irene Parmenter of Charleston, S.C.; special friend and buddy, Bailey; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
At his request, there will be no public visiting hours. A committal service will be held in the spring in the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta.
Donations in Mervyn’s memory may be made to The National Kidney Foundation, 30 E 33rd St., Fl 3, New York, NY, 10016-5337.
