Michael A. Gustafson Sr., 59, of Woolwich, passed away on June 30. He will long be remembered for his smile, his practical jokes, and generous demeanor.
He would often buy things he didn’t need, just so other people could borrow them. He loved riding motorcycles, fishing, hunting, reading and music.
“Gus” was born July, 22, 1958 in Gardiner, to Benhard G. Jr., and Shirley (Hatch), the fourth of five children. He grew up in Wiscasset and graduated from Wiscasset High School, Class of 1976.
He later married Dianne Brown and together they raised four children.
After graduation, he went to work at BIW, then went to work in the family business, Live Bait Transport, shipping sea worms from the dealers all along the coast of Maine to dealers on both coasts of the country and to Europe. Five years later, he joined the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, first in the jail and later as a Transport Deputy and Court Security, for over 20 years. He loved his career, and received numerous awards from the department. He also volunteered at Camp Postcard, helping kids at risk have a summer camp and giving them a chance to see police in a positive light.
Gus is predeceased by his father, Benhard Gustafson, Jr.
He is survived by sons, Michael Gustafson Jr., Nicholas Gustafson, and Andrew Wolf; daughter, Jeanna Gustafson; brother, Benhard G. III and wife Lisa; sisters, Linda Austin and husband Brian, JoAnn Fairservice and husband Mark, and Mary Lou Gustafson and husband John Merry; and grandchildren, Steven Ward Jr., Matthew Ward, and Hannah Jasinksi.
