Michael David Harkins Sr., 60, of Georgetown, died Jan. 8 at MidCoast Hospital in Brunswick with his family at his side.
Born in Bath on Dec. 16, 1958, son of Mary Martha (Muckler) and Daniel O’Connor Harkins Jr., he graduated from Morse High School in the class of 1977.
He was an active member of the union at Bath Iron Works where he was a welder, retiring in 2003. He was a jack-of-all-trades; as a talented carpenter, plumber, electrician, and farmer he could do anything from building homes to repairing cars. He was the maintenance handyman for Sarah’s Café in Wiscasset. One of his passions after retirement was spending time restoring the farmhouse he lived in with his longtime companion, Sarah Heald, taking care of animals and gardening.
He was predeceased by nephew, Andrew Harkins.
He had many long time friends he considered family and is survived by sons, Michael David Harkins Jr. and wife Jennifer, Matthew Patrick Harkins and wife Annmarie, and Andrew “Jack” Jackson Harkins, all of Bath; daughters, Sara Jane Frazier and husband Donald of Arkansas, Mary Elizabeth Harkins of Bath, and Susan Marie Harkins and fiance Bob Fabiano of Salt Lake, Utah; brothers, Patrick Harkins and wife Beth of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Daniel O’Connor III; niece, Stephanie Harkins; close cousin, Milford Rice; and grandchildren, Emily Frazier, Hazel, Rowan, and Willow Harkins, Amelia and Lila Harkins, and Miles and Elizabeth Norris.
A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date.
