Michael Earle Abbott, 48, of Portland, died suddenly on April 29 at Maine Medical Center.
Born in Boothbay Harbor, he was the son of Henry and Carol Abbott. He attended local schools and at age 11 was accepted at Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, Mass., graduating in 1979. While at Perkins, he participated in numerous activities, including Boy Scouts, and in his senior year was president of the Student Council.
After graduation, he returned to Maine and entered the Maine Center for the Blind
Vocational Rehabilitation Program and became part of the industrial workshop. He was very proud when he was named their blind worker of the year. He was interviewed several times by WCSH TV concerning his job duties at the industrial workshop. He was most recently employed by Nichols Auto Parts, South Portland.
He loved to play cribbage and was an avid sports fan. Especially dear to him were the Boston Red Sox and his beloved Portland Sea Dogs.
Besides his parents, he is survived by two brothers and a sister, Jay Abbott and wife Lori of Boothbay Harbor, Jason Abbott of Wells, and Kelly Coffey of Lenoir, N.C.; many aunts, uncles and cousins; Mike Wozich, his cab driver and friend for many years; and the residents and associates at the Iris Network who were his second family.
Memorial graveside service 2 p.m., Fri., May 4 at Oak Lawn Cemetery, Rt. 96, Boothbay Harbor with Mike Wozich officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Michael’s memory to the Iris Network, 189 Park Ave., Portland, ME 04102.
