Mildred A. Reed, 101, of Friendship, passed away May 31 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.
Mildred was born Oct. 31, 1907 on Bremen Long Island, a daughter of the late Lottie McLain and Melvin Simmons, Sr. She attended local schools and Waldoboro High School.
She worked at O’Hara’s Fish Plant in Rockland for many years as a fish cutter and packer. When at home, Mildred liked to play her piano, listen to religious programs and loved to watch Tiger Woods play golf.
On many evenings she would call her boys and tell them there was a religious program on the television and what channel to turn to.
Her husband, Bud Reed, died at 47 years of age. Mildred made doughnuts and sold them to the neighbors, especially the summer residents. She also worked for them, cleaning their homes on regular basis. Her old home was a mansion to her. She worked hard to make ends meet, never asking for outside assistance. She had a lovely flower garden.
She was a devoted-religious Christian lady who enjoyed reading her Bible. As the oldest resident of Friendship, she held the Boston Post Cane.
She was predeceased by her parents; son, Wilbur who died in his early 40s from a cerebral hemorrhage; brothers, Ralph and Stanley Simmons; three sisters, Myrtle Thibodeau, Edna Davis and Eula Aho; grandchildren, Kelly Johnson, Valerie Simmons, Craig Reed, Drew Reed and Barry Reed; and great-grandson, Shane Simmons.
Survivors include her brothers, Melvin Simmons, Jr. of Cushing and Glenys Harrington of Friendship; sons, Philip Reed, Sr. and wife Evelyn of Friendship, Wendell Reed and wife Clara, of Friendship and Robert Reed and wife Louise of Friendship; 17 grandchildren; and approximately 30 great-grandchildren.
