Mildred “Mit” Cochran Kane White passed away in Damariscotta on Oct. 12, following an aggressive battle with cancer.
Mildred was born Jan. 27, 1919, in Richmond, Va., during the Spanish flu epidemic. She was the third child and only daughter born to Charles Clarence Kane, Sr. and Essie Walker Cochran Kane. She had three brothers, Charles Clarence “C.C.” Kane, Jr., Robert Patrick Kane, and William Davis Kane.
On June 8, 1939, she married Ralph Vincent “Buck” White, both graduates of John Marshall High School in Richmond. Va.
Mildred was a homemaker, settling with Buck in Mechanicsville, Va., and later moving to Ashland, Va.
In the early 50’s, she joined the service department of Wards Company in Richmond (now Circuit City) as secretary and bookkeeper, and later became personal secretary to Abraham L. Hecht, founding partner. She retired in 1970, when Mr. Hecht retired.
Buck studied bookkeeping at night, and following military service in the Philippines in WWII, joined Kane Plumbing Company in Richmond, Va., becoming treasurer. Buck passed away July 26, 1987, and is buried at Signal Hill Memorial Park in Hanover, Va., where Mildred will be buried alongside him.
Mildred remained in Richmond, Va. until 2003, when she moved to Maine to be closer to her family.
Surviving Mildred are her son, Ralph Stephen White of Waldoboro; grandchildren, Michael Stephen White and Katherine Elizabeth White Morong of Camden, and David Andrew White of Statesville, N.C.; and five great-grandchildren, Sydney Katherine White, Rhys Andrew White, Morgan Alexander Scotten-White, Stirling Robin Scotten-White, and Chad Owen Morong.
Visitation 3-7 p.m., Tues., Oct. 17 at Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta.
Funeral services 2:30 p.m., Sat., Oct. 28 at Signal Hill Memorial Park, Hanover, Va., followed by a reception and dinner at a local restaurant. In case of inclement weather, services will be conducted under cover.
