Mildred D. Plummer, 91, of Damariscotta, passed away peacefully in her sleep, with her husband by her side, on March 16.
She was born in Jersey City, N.J. on June 2, 1917 to Harry and Mary Flynn Davis. She lived in Bergenfield, N.J., and attended St. John Catholic School and Dumont High. She moved to Maine in 1931, and graduated from Lincoln Academy in 1934.
Mildred worked for Glidden Insurance Agency until her marriage in 1938 to Milton “Pete” Plummer. They dated all through high school and celebrated their 71st anniversary in November. She was a great companion for all of Pete’s life and together they raised 11 children.
When their children were grown, they opened the Victorian Stable, the first all-Maine craft shop in the state, which they ran for 15 years before turning it over to their daughter. Upon retirement, they moved to their present home. They traveled to visit far-flung children in California, Hawaii, Florida and the Caribbean island of Grenada.
Mildred was a parishioner of St. Patrick’s Church for 78 years, serving on the advisory council for 16 years and as president for six. She was a lector for 20 years, a choir member, and the first president of the Women’s Club.
She worked as a hostess at the Damariscotta Information Bureau for three summers, was a member of the Maine Genealogical Society, the Boothbay Genealogical Group, the Mayflower Society, and a charter member of the Muscongus Community Club.
Mildred was an avid reader and an excellent writer. She co-authored “A History of St. Patrick’s”, “Oyster Shells and Sailing Ships”, “A History of Lincoln Academy”, and “A History of Damariscotta”, for the Sesquicentennial.
She also enjoyed writing poetry, doing crossword puzzles, genealogy and history.
Mildred was most in her element as the mother and grandmother of 59 progeny. Holidays brought a steady stream of family, and Mildred never failed to provide an overflowing supply of food. She was an amazing woman and was intelligent, strong, loving and generous.
She as predeceased by her sister, Marion Burns; and two grandsons, Matthew Harvie and Michael Ray.
She leaves behind her husband Milton; children, Judy Meadows, Barbara Briggs, Carol Ray, Marilyn Harvie, Kenneth Plummer, Ellen Hunt, Brenda Walsh, Gail MacPhee, Lorraine Palino, Keith Plummer, and Irene Plummer; 29 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
At Mildred’s request, a service will be held at St. Patrick’s for family only.
