Muriel Virginia Schmidt, 94, of Hillsdale, N.Y., passed away Aug. 20 at Sharon Hospital in Sharon, Conn.
She was born in Elizabeth, N.J. on Aug. 28, 1916, the daughter of the late Edwin M. and Amelia (Charles) Davis.
Virginia lived first part of her life in Northwestern, N.J., mostly in Baleville. She and her husband, Edward Rodman Schmidt, retired to New Harbor in 1983. In 2009, she went to live with her son in Hillsdale, N.Y.
She was a lifelong homemaker and a steadfast source of gentle support to her family. Over the decades she was a pillar of stability, taking in and caring for relatives with grace and simplicity.
Virginia was a great reader and intelligent observer of the world. Those who knew her will always appreciate her warmth and her understated sense of humor. Her witty and informative letters were treasured by all.
She was a great animal lover, especially of cats.
Survivors include a son, Robert E. and wife Kathleen A. Schmidt of Hillsdale, N.Y.; grandson, Alec J. Schmidt of Hillsdale, N.Y.; and sister, Margaret J. Walbrecht of New Harbor.
There are no calling hours.
A memorial service for her and her late husband will take place in Maine and will be announced at a later date.
Interment will be private.
